Reasons for NOT getting pregnant
by Amber Benge
There's nothing worse than the disappointment of a negative pregnancy test when you are trying to conceive. Many couples try to get pregnant for months before ever seeing that exciting "positive" line on the pregnancy test, but there are some major pitfalls you should avoid to help speed up your conception success. Here are the 10 most likely reasons that you aren't getting pregnant.
You're Not Having Enough Sex
If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. If you only have sex once a week, you are most likely missing your opportunity to get pregnant. Conception occurs during a narrow window of opportunity, which your doctor calls "ovulation". This is the magic day when your ovaries decide to release an egg that could possibly become your little bundle of joy. But you only have 24to 36 hours after the egg is released to make sure it gets fertilized. So if this sounds like you, put down the computer and get busy.
You're Having Too Much Sex
If you are trying to conceive by having sex multiple times a day, you need to take a break. Having sex every other day is the optimal schedule for conception. This insures that you won't miss your window of opportunity when ovulation occurs, but you also salvage your sperm count by giving it 48 hours to replenish itself. If you have too much sex, you just won't have enough little soldiers left to do the job. Slow things down and get some sleep and you'll be pregnant before you know it!
You Dash To The Bathroom
This is the most common mistake women make when trying to get pregnant. Your first impulse after sex will be to run to the bathroom, but this is a major problem when you are trying to conceive. The best action plan for conception requires you to remain on your back for at least 20 minutes after sex so that those important little sperm can have as much time as they need to get to your egg. If you get up immediately after sex, gravity will work against you and your chances of conception will plummet.
You're Using Too Much Lubricant
When you're trying to conceive, steer clear of artificial lubricants like KY Jelly. These slick substances can actually kill sperm and make it harder to conceive. Avoid all lubricants, glycerin soaps, scented tampons, and douches while trying to conceive. All of these products are deadly enemies of sperm.
You're Smoking Away Your Fertility
Most people think it's harmless to light up before you get pregnant, but that cigarette could be killing your chances of conception. Smoking just 10 cigarettes per day can lower your chances of conception by 50 percent. It's important to stop smoking before pregnancy in order to maximize your chances of successful conception!
You're Addicted To Coffee
Doctors advise women to avoid caffeine during pregnancy, but you should also cut back on your coffee habit while trying to conceive. While fertility experts argue whether excessive caffeine consumption will affect consumption, any doctor will tell you that caffeine restricts blood vessels. It can increase your heart rate and give you that jittery feeling that coffee lovers live for in the morning. But conception is more likely when you are calm and relaxed, so ease off the caffeine to better your chances.
Your Man Is Wearing Briefs
When you want a baby, your man needs to avoid the tighty whities. Tight briefs will keep your man's package scrunched up and overheated, which can damage his sperm count. Opt for boxers during the months when you are trying to get pregnant.
You're A Gym Nut
Exercise is a wonderful way to get your body fit and ready for pregnancy. Just be sure you aren't getting too much exercise while trying to conceive. By drastically reducing your body fat percentage, you can send your menstrual cycle into chaos or it may disappear altogether. Exercise in moderation is wonderful, but don't overdo it. Now is not the time to drop that extra ten pounds. Your zeal for the treadmill could be hurting your chances of conception.
You're Stressed Out
It's easy to fall into the dreaded habit of mechanical sex when you're trying to get pregnant. But if you put too much pressure on yourselves, you might have too many stress hormones pumping through your body to conceive. Loosen up and have some fun with it and you will be pleasantly surprised when that pregnancy test shows a great big "positive" at the end of the month!
You Have A Medical Condition
Most couples don't get pregnant on their first attempt, but if a year goes by and you still aren't getting pregnant, make an appointment with your gynecologist. Several medical conditions could be the underlying cause of your fertility struggles and the first step is identifying the problem. Most fertility tests are simple and fast, and they offer great insight into what is causing a delay in conception. Before you go buy another box of pregnancy tests, try mixing up your routine to see if a simple change will make a big difference. If you are still struggling to conceive, it's always a good idea to consult a doctor to learn more about the important ways to track your menstrual cycle and have ultimate pregnancy success.
