Baby
By
week 14, your baby is the size of a lemon, measuring about 3 1/2 inches
and weighing 1 1/2 ounces. His body also starts to even out this week,
as his arms and head are finally proportionate to the rest of his body.
His hands and feet now measure about a 1/2 inch long, and are actively
punching and kicking inside you. Don't be alarmed if you can't feel
this movement, it's too small for you to feel.
Your baby is also busy making facial expressions by week 14. He can
squint his eyes and his lips can turn into a frown. His neck has grown
longer and his chin starts to take shape. His kidneys can produce urine
and his liver has begun to produce bile. His spleen has even begun to
help in the production of red blood cells.
Mom
Week 14 is when most women
"pop" or begin to show. This occurs because your uterus is atop your
pubic bone, which may be pushing your belly out a bit.
Unfortunately, week 14 may also bring another unwanted symptom,
constipation. Pregnancy slows your digestive system, and your regular
dose of prenatal vitamins contains iron. Though iron is vital to
preventing anemia, it can also contribute to constipation. Here are
some tips to help combat constipation...
- Drink plenty of water! At least 10 8-ounce glasses a day. Pregnant
women need to drink more water than usual in order to keep their
intestines and baby healthy!
- Eat foods that are high in fiber, like lentil beans, black beans, lima beans, whole wheat pasta, pears or peas.
- Exercise, even light or moderate walking can help to loosen your bowels and relieve bloating.
- Try alternating hot and cold beverages to naturally stimulate your
bowels and reduce gas. For example, munch on some ice chips and then
treat yourself to a warm cup of decaffeinated tea.
- Speak with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. He
may recommend a stool softener that is safe for you to take during
pregnancy.
Remember, an occasional splurge is okay, but your body only really needs 300 more calories a day while you are pregnant!
